Car battery
Small habits, longer battery life.
A car battery does not need much attention, but a few small habits decide whether it lasts two years or four. Most early battery failures we see at the doorstep come down to the same avoidable causes. Here is what actually helps.
Short trips of five or ten minutes do not give the alternator enough time to put back the charge the starter used. If the car mostly does short runs, take it for a longer drive once a week so the battery charges fully.
A parked car still draws a small amount of power for its electronics. Left standing for weeks, the battery slowly discharges and may not have enough left to start. If you are travelling, ask someone to run the car for fifteen minutes once a week.
Cabin lights, headlamps and chargers left on overnight drain the battery completely. One full drain is usually recoverable; repeated deep drains shorten the battery's life sharply.
A white or greenish crust on the battery terminals weakens the connection and can feel exactly like a weak battery. If you see build-up, get it cleaned before it causes starting trouble.
Repeated jumpstarts are a symptom, not a solution. A battery that keeps needing a jump is either not holding charge or is not being charged properly. Finding out early costs less than a roadside failure.
A battery that vibrates loose in its tray suffers internal damage over time. If you hear it move or see the clamp loose, get it tightened.
If the battery is more than two years old, a quick test before a road trip tells you where you stand. It takes a few minutes and removes the guesswork.
