Car battery
Catch the early warnings before the car refuses to start.
A car battery rarely fails without warning. Most batteries show small signs days or weeks before the car refuses to start. If you catch them early, you can replace the battery on your schedule instead of getting stranded outside your building in Khar or stuck in Bandra traffic.
When you turn the key or press the start button, the engine should turn over quickly and start within a second or two. If it turns over slowly, like it is tired, the battery is struggling to supply enough power. Slow cranking in the morning that improves later in the day is a classic early sign.
Watch the headlamps or the cabin light while the engine cranks. If they dip noticeably, the battery has little reserve. The starter motor draws a big burst of current, and a weak battery cannot run the starter and the lights at the same time.
Look at the battery itself once in a while. A swollen or bloated case, or a white or greenish crust collecting around the metal terminals, means the battery needs attention. Build-up on the terminals also weakens the connection, which can feel exactly like a weak battery.
One jumpstart after leaving the lights on overnight is normal. Needing a jumpstart twice within a short span means the battery is not holding charge. A jumpstart gets the car running; it does not fix the battery.
The battery-shaped light on the dashboard should go off soon after the engine starts. If it stays on, the charging system or the battery needs checking. Sometimes it is the alternator, sometimes the battery itself.
